This is the ninth edition of the Electronic Components and Systems (ECS) Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (ECS-SRIA), developed by experts from the European ECS community and coordinated by the three industry associations AENEAS, EPoSS, and INSIDE.
This edition reflects the latest technological developments and strategic priorities of the ECS industry. The ECS-SRIA 2026 provides updated and expanded insights into the key research and innovation priorities for the coming years. It includes a more in-depth focus on Spintronics and the varied use cases of Artificial Intelligence (AI), both of which continue to drive major transformations across the ECS landscape. The agenda also highlights advancements in new materials, power electronics, and the increasing relevance of Quality, Reliability, Safety, and Resilience for next-generation electronic systems.
A significant emphasis is placed on progress of beyond CMOS technologies, covering new approaches in manufacturing, integration, and packaging. The growing importance of chiplets—considered a potential game-changer for the industry—is discussed in this context. Photonics also remains a key topic, particularly regarding the need for high-bandwidth, communication-intensive connections to support on-chip to global data traffic and distributed as well as neuromorphic AI hardware.
Sustainability remains a central theme across the entire document, with research topics focusing on improving energy efficiency and reducing the environmental footprint of the ECS industry.
